Comparative Analysis of Power Generation Between Concentrated Solar Power and Photovoltaic Systems Under High Altitude Conditions

Abstract

Solar energy harnessed through Photovoltaic (PV) systems and Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) systems represents two distinct technological with high potential. This article undertakes a comparative analysis of these power generation technologies within one of the globe's most radiant solar zones: The Andean region of Bolivia, also distinguished by its elevated altitudes. The evaluation revolves around the specifications requirement for a 50 MW plant situated in Bolivia's La Paz department. The evaluation criteria include the Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE), Plant Factor (PF), Investment Cost (IC), and land area requirements. Moreover, considering the intermittent nature of solar energy, this study also compares the energy storage capabilities inherent to both technologies. Additionally, comparisons of the results were made with analogous CSP installations located in Italy, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia.
