Abstract

This dissertation presents itself as a research exercise of thinking about the tolerance as a political compromise. It starts from a rescue about the concept of tolerance until it arrives to the theoretical comprehension of its opposite, the intolerance. Then intends to go deeper into the institutional (state) dimension of intolerance, questioning the definition of intolerable elaborated and sustained by this space. It uses the concept of recognizing in the way to think institutional intolerance.Immigration (and its subject, the immigrant) highlights as a political phenomenon inserted in the intolerable category, and it is worth reflecting on why and how the immigrant is considered intolerable, always remembering the contemporary political organization in nationstates. Finally, it analyzes how and at what levels national and international migration policies are intolerant.
