Comparing lumbar electromyography and myelography in lumbalgias treatment . A retrospective study was carried out on 51 patients (35 males and 16 females) attending the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Service of the University Hospital of the Andes, Merida, Venezuela between 1979 and 1983 with diagnotic of lumbalgies uni or bilateral, and were compared by two clinical procedures (lumbar electromyography and myelography) to detect the ethiological cause of this pathology. We studied procedence, incoming diagnosis, age, gender, jobs, levels of radicular compression by electromyography and by myelography, surgically intervened cases, postoperatory diagnosis, and study of the pathological anatomy of the surgically obtained specimen. It is concluded that the “pulpous” herniated disk is the tghe main cause of low back pain, the most affected age was between 30 and 34 years. The patients need a multidisciplinary approach for their study and treatment. Both methods (electromyography and myelography) are effective to get to the cause of the lumbociatalgias symptoms. The electromyography does not require previous preparation and can be repeated as many times as is neccessary
