In this paper we analyze the current status, perspectives, advances, challenges and opportunities offered by steel sustainability and its by-products as construction materials. We make the case for steel sustainability and the benefits of using this material, with a particular emphasis on its use in the construction industry. The environmental efficacy of steel, supported by research and technological development and innovation, has been constantly improved and perfected. This enhances the uses of this product, which, in the current globalized economy, faces great challenges before it reaches and consolidates its status as a sustainable product. These key challenges are discussed in this paper. We also draw some conclusions in relation to the research undertaken in order to instigate the discussion and analysis of this relevant topic with the aim to promote the use of this product based on its sustainable qualities, thus contributing to improved wellbeing, environment, and quality of life of humankind, as necessary conditions for its preservation and survival, which inevitably would influence the aim of sustainable development.
