Abstract
This article presents a series of arguments concerning the need for a new politics of language in Colombia within the context of Colombians living in the United States, and based upon the idea of a transnational community as a new political, social and cultural commitment with the country. In addition to considering the difficulties that, from the linguistic point of view, most Colombians face in the process of identity readjustment in a new sociocultural environment in the United States and the consequences of those difficulties for future political commitment to Colombia, the article proposes plurilinguism as a condition for building a transnational community.
