Sustainable development constitutes the dominant current paradigm which serves as a guide for the economic and social development of mankind. In spite of the apparent global agreement about its importance, its practical application is still a very difficult task, especially in urban sectors of LatinAmerican countries, which show several differences between current cities and the desired sustainable cities. In this paper, some important issues of the cities, its environment and sustainable development are analyzed, in order to contribute with the comprehension of the urban reality of the Latin-American cities as well as the possibilities for sustainable development. keywords: Latin-American, cities, environment y sustainable development. fecha de recepcion: agosto 15 de 2009 fecha de aceptac ion: agosto 28 de 2009
