This study aimed at determining how much knowledge the students had when using schemas as a learning and study strategy. The study followed a qualitative design and an ethnographic approach. Knowledge about the importance of studying schemas was determined. Also, schema advantage of analyzing, discussing, and relating them with previous experiences was determined for content knowledge construction in a course of reading and writing. Results show that most students do not know this study tool. Once they start their university studies, students do not normally know that written language is developed through theories that explain its complexity. During their second semester, students get in contact with theories; hence, the importance of setting the basis for its understanding.
