Abstract
Expert systems are artificial intelligence programs designed to simulate the reasoning of a human expert in relation to a specific subject or area. Since their appearance until today, and because they are closely related to the revolution caused by artificial intelligence, they have transformed various fields, including medicine for the diagnosis of various diseases, data engineering for data management, and many other areas. In the educational field, expert systems offer important tools to personalize student learning, allowing to adapt to the individual needs of each student, which not only improves academic performance, but also enriches the educational process. As far as academic research is concerned, expert systems can play a crucial role in increasing efficiency, improving decision making, supporting monitoring and fostering collaboration among researchers. These systems stand out for their ability to manage large amounts of information, facilitating the analysis, selection and organization of important data, which is ultimately essential for students seeking to develop quality research while optimizing time. However, the use of expert systems also presents some challenges, such as the need to ensure transparency and ethics in the use of the data.
