dc.description.abstractThis study examines, describes, and analyses differ ent cohesive dvices in eight (8) written texts that are used in courses of Readinga nd Wrtin g in English, levels I and II. These courses are part of the curriculum of Modern Langua ges and Literatures in the Department of Modern Languages at the University of the Andes in Merida, Venezuela. The taxonomy of cohesive relations selected for the sample analysis was that of Halliday and Hassan (1976). This study also analyzes the influence of t he cohesive ties present in the selected written texts on the process of reading comprehensi on of a group of six (6) students who attend the courses mentioned abov e. A qualitative approach was used because of the comparative nature of student responses to various texts. The research instruments used for
