Periodontal diseases are the result of a host microorganism interaction, in which the dysbiosis of the dental biofilm around the tooth stimulates the immune system response, triggering inflammation and progressive and irreversible destruction of dental support tissues. To achieve a successful periodontal treatment, it is necessary to carry out a precise periodontal diagnosis and prognosis; thus, periodontal parameters must be used appropriately. For this reason, it is proposed to evaluate the parameters for the diagnosis of periodontal diseases used for teaching dentists of the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Los Andes (FOULA). A descriptive study was carried out with quantitative approach, non-experimental design and cross-sectional; where a survey of 68 teaching dentists was applied through an instrument structured by 15 closed questions with a Likert scale of three response categories.(always, almost always and never). The parameters used by (FOULA) teaching dentist for the diagnosis of Periodontal Diseases were: clinical insertion level 55,17 %, bleeding to probing 62,07% probing depth 65,62% % and lost bone x-ray 72,41 %. It is concluded that the parameters used with greater predominance were, the radiographic bone loss followed by the depth of the sounding; evidencing the fact that all the dentists evaluated recognized the diagnostic differences between gingival health, gingivitis and periodontitis through the use of periodontal parameter, however 58,62 % of the respondents carried out the periodontal clinical examination exhaustively.
