The author examines the debate about the innate or social origin of aggression and tendency to war among human beings. The essay rejects the reductionist positions that try to explain behavior only in terms of biology and instinct or else of learning and context influence. It displays the central arguments in the debate using the etiology’s point of view, in particular the works of Konrad Lorenz.
