Abstract

Muscle modeling allows an optimum peripheral sealed with custom impression tray for the final impression to obtain functional retention in the treatment of complete dentures. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the effectiveness of muscle modeling obtained by using three types of dental materials: low melting modeling, silicone heavy body and vinyl polysiloxane. With prior consent, ten upper total edentulous patients were selected. On each anatomical cast with short design, three custom impression trays were made to obtain three functional casts; on each one of the functional casts, a heat cure acrylic base was made and a wire type hook was incorporate in the palate area to hold a digital weight scale. Three double-blind specialists evaluated retention of the bases. Data were analyzed using nonparametric test Wilconxon, being statistically significant when comparing the muscle modeling done with modeling composition and heavy silicone body (P=0.028), and polysiloxane modeling composition differences (P = 0.037) according to comparisons between groups, a highly significant difference in heavy body silicone and silicone bite registration (P = 0.007) was found.
