This article examines the historical process of constitution of the borderland area between Brazil and Uruguay focusing on the dynamics of political and economic interactions that involved both societies and the impact they had on the binational relation. The analysis is mainly concerned with the history of the negotiations to solve a long-standing conflict for the arrangement of limits between the two States and it highlights the role played by local institutional actors in Brazil in coincidence with the goals of the foreign policy of their country. The article underlines the ability of Uruguayan diplomcacy to manage the question and it concludes that there was continuity between those negotiations and the agreements signed by Brazil and Uruguay from March to August 2010.
