This paper aims to analyze the historical configuration of the structure of the Mexican automotive industry from identifying the different processes and agents of change that encouraged such processes; In order to characterize the impact of public policies, on the one hand, and the market forces on the other. The Official Gazette of the Federation, the economic censuses, the national statistical directory of economic units (DENUE) of INEGI and reports from the Mexican Association of the Automotive Industry (AMIA) were made based on a historical, statistical and geographic research. The results show that SME’s in the sector, particularly micro-units, are potential poles of regional development, so it is proposed to build a public policy agenda that addresses the most vulnerable companies but whose benefits would have a direct impact in the national economy.
