When Researchers and Farmers Collaborate
Abstract
Successful collaborations between researchers and farmers depend on mutual respect and shared goals. The case studies show that farmers and researchers in West Africa are collaborating to develop botanical methods to control the striga weed. Bangladeshi farmers grow pesticide-free vegetables for their own families, while relying on agrochemicals for commercial vegetables, a valuable lesson for pest control researchers. Bolivian farmers and researchers are collaborating to combat a new pest, the potato tuber moth, by combining traditional knowledge with scientific research. Andean farmers combine local weather forecasting methods with modern meteorological forecasts to make informed agricultural decisions. Innovation fairs bring together farmers, researchers and businesses to share ideas and develop practical solutions. Farmers in Bolivia are collaborating to develop effective organic alternatives to chemical fertilizers and pesticides. These examples show how to leverage the strengths of both farmers and scientists to find practical innovations.
