A new method for the determination of seismic loads is presented. It is based on statistical correlations between parametric representations of accelerogram records and their response spectra. Previously developed models are unified in a method relating some characteristic parameters of the strong motion portion of the accelerogram record with the coefficients of the mathematical model for the response spectra. It smoothes out peaks and valleys while giving a good approximation of the response. This relationships allow the seismic engineer to estimate the maximum response of structures with the sole Knowledge of the expected values of parameters such as earthquake magnitude and epicentral distance.
