Abstract
A study was conducted to compare the postoperative sensitivity in restorations with Atraumatic Restorative Treatment (ART) with and without dentin conditioner. The decayed tissue was removed with manual instruments, the cavity was sealed with glass ionomer, a material with extraordinary carioprophylactic properties. Most studies support the effectiveness of the treatment, but the fact that it is
performed on demineralized dentin could affect the adhesion and durability of the restorations, which may also affect the success of the treatment. To avoid that, dentine conditioners are used to modify the dentin waste layer and favor marginal sealing.
This study was performed on 30 teeth divided into two groups: group A where ART was applied with dentin conditioner and group B without conditioner. Sensitivity was recorded through the scale of faces in an instrument designed and validated for such purpose. The results were analyzed with the Chi square statistical model. When evaluating immediate and mediate postoperative sensitivity, no significant differences were found for the groups. It was concluded that applying dentin conditioner does not influence postoperative sensitivity in a short term; hence, it is recommended to evaluate the long-term restorations to determine whether there is any significant
change.
