In this article, we present the results of a bibliographic review carried out on the use of clinical simulation as a didactic strategy in the training of professional competences in medical students. The objective was to analyze the effectiveness of the use of clinical simulation in the development of professional skills in medical students, prior to the actual contact with the patient. The descriptive method used made possible to assess the use of clinical simulation in higher medical education in different countries. The results of the literature review showed that clinical simulation as a didactic resource used in the teaching of medical education, allows good training, strengthens the development of clinical skills and reduces errors and promotes a safe and quality health care. The conclusion of the study points out the importance of the use of clinical simulation in the development of professional competences i.e.: the development of knowledge, of how to do them, and how to live by them.
