The metabolic syndrome has become a public health problem; it is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality, increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes mellitus type 2. One of the risk factors that make up this syndrome is obesity. Leptin is a hormone associated with fat deposition processes and related comorbidities obesity. In this sense, this research is to study the relationship between genetic characteristics associated with leptin and metabolic syndrome in a family group. The sample consisted of children over 9 years, adolescents, adults and elderly men and women in a family with high frequency of bipolar disorder in Bailadores town, which belongs to the municipality Rivas Davila, state Merida. The analyzed sample refers to 96 subjects. The female has the highest number of subjects with abnormal values in almost all constituent variables of the metabolic syndrome and are characterized by having problems with bipolar disorder or mood, metabolic syndrome, receptor gene Q/Q for leptin and relationship son. The male has not mental problems or metabolic syndrome; the receptor for leptin gene is associated with Q/R and the relationship greatgrandson. The types of disorders are associated with risk factors relationship and age as the determinant factor of bipolar disorder is age.
