Abstract

Any pathology begins at the cellular level representing morphological or functional changes, so it is very important the use of techniques for observing such changes and lead to an early diagnosis and treatment. Oral exfoliative cytology is defined as the study and interpretation of the character of the cells that are shed naturally or artificially, from the oral mucosa. Consists microscopically observe the morphology of the surface epithelial cells after collection, fixation and staining. It is a simple, non-invasive, relatively painless and well accepted by patients. Made a research is descriptive and transactional design field with quantitative approach, the sample consisted of teachers who work in the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Los Andes that met the inclusion criteria, we used a survey to collect data with closed answers questions directed to teachers sampled, which addressed the oral cytology used by them and their students as a means of diagnosis of oral lesions. It was observed that oral cytology is used with very low frequency as diagnosed technique, as is little encouraged by teachers, and in  some cases it is not known .. To conclude the literature indicates that oral cytology is an important means of early diagnosis of oral premalignant lesions, because this is important to apply as a means of diagnosis in the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Los Andes.
