Corporate social responsibility, citizenship and development
Abstract
Despite the rise or CSR, two critical questions remain unanswered: whether it is compatible with profit maximisation and whether it has the social and environmental impacts its advocates claim. The author argues that CSR has the potential to promote development and to widen the range of rights that people enjoy as citizens. He pins down the institutional conditions under which such potential can be realised and discusses the decisive role of social organisations and mass media. Finally, the author suggests a research agenda aimed to better understand the role of CSR in Colombia and to examine its real contribution to strengthen citizenship.
