Abstract

This study analyzes the Royal Cedula sent by Charles IV, dated June 18, 1806, the one that by loss was reproduced on October 6, 1807, in which although it did not formally establish the university in Merida, it did concede the power to the College Seminary of San Buenaventura to confer degrees, that is of bachelors and doctor. It also stated that in a solemn and public act on December 4, 1808, the first degrees of bachelor and doctor were awarded, an event that permitted the College to show that although it could not legally call itself a university, in fact it undertook that noble university mission from 1808.
