Las Misiones Jesuíticas de Chiquitos, Patrimonio de la Humanidad: descubrimiento y resurrección

Abstract

Resumen: Las Misiones Jesuitas de Chiquitos en las tierras bajas de Bolivia se inscribie ron en 1990 en la lista del patrimonio mundial de la Unesco, pero hasta alre dedor de 1950, el patrimonio cultural de estos pueblos quedó casi totalmente desconocido, tanto para los bolivianos en general, como para los científicos especializados. Gracias a que el jesuita suizo Martín Schmid, estando en su tierra natal, se acordó de éstas, fue posible iniciar desde 1972 un programa de restauración de sus iglesias dirigido por el arquitecto suizo Hans Roth, lo que desencadenó la reanimación de la herencia chiquitana tangible e intangible, hasta llegar a formar parte de la identidad cultural cruceña. El artículo cuenta la historia de la creación, supervivencia, descubrimiento y resurrección del patrimonio de Chiquitos, con un enfoque especial del aporte suizo a este proceso.

Abstract: The Jesuit Missions of Chiquitos in the lowlands of Bolivia were inscribed in 1990 in the Unesco World Heritage List, however the cultural heritage of these sites was almost completely ignored until about 1950 by most Bolivians and well as by specialized scientists. Thanks to the reminiscences of the Swiss Jesuit Martin Schmid in his homeland, it was possible to start in 1972 a restoration project of his churches directed by the Swiss architect Hans Roth, that stimulated the reactivation of the tangible and non-tangible heritage of Chiquitos, until it became part of the cultural identity of Santa Cruz. The pa-per tells the story of the creation, survival, discovery and revival of the heritage of Chiquitos, with a special approach to the Swiss contribution to this process.
