Del olvido a la memoria y la presencia: estrategias de visibilización de los movimientos sociales afrovenezolanos

Abstract

El objetivo de este articulo es analizar el papel de los movimientos sociales afrovenezolanos que en las ultimas decadas han desarrollado actividades y exigido reivindicaciones para afi rmar la especifi cidad cultural y reclamar derechos historicos en el seno de una nacion que, bajo el discurso ofi cial del mestizaje homogeneizante, ha ignorado tradicionalmente su caracter plurietnico y en particular su componente afrodescendiente. La accion de las organizaciones negras venezolanas responde a una estrategia de visibilizacion, de rescate de la memoria y afi anzamiento de la identidad, que tiene su mas reciente exponente en la inclusion de la variable etnico-racial en el censo 2011. Abstract The purpose of this article is to analyze the role of the Afro-Venezuelan social movements that in the last decades have developed activities and demands to affi rm cultural diff erentiation and to claim historical rights in the context of a nation that, under the offi cial discourse of crossbreeding and homogeneity, has traditionally denied its multiethnic character, in particular its Afro-descendant component. Th e actions of Venezuelan black organizations are based on a strategy of visibility, of rescuing of memory and consolidation of identity, that has its more recent example on the inclusion of the racial and ethnic variable in the 2011 census.
