Abstract This article explains the system SAPEP: an interactive system for the appropriation of planning strategies in the fabrication of axisymmetrical parts. It obtains the solution to the fabrication problems with sub problem refinement using a feature-based representation not only for the final parts but for the manufacturing operations. The appropriation scheme is a process tracing variation that, by comparison with a “base strategy”, questions about the criteria used. The base strategy is structured by refinement criteria (Which sub-problem to refine, and How to do it), and choice criteria. The session output is the automatic history of the prototype and expert’s actions, improved with explanations.
