Fauna Boliviana 2: LOS AVESTRUCES DE BOLIVIA

Abstract

En Bolivia viven las 2 especies de avestruces sudamericanos. El ñandú (Rhea americana) habita en las tierras bajas orientales de Bolivia y el suri (Pterocnemia pennata) se encuentra en los Andes. Rhea americana abunda principalmente en la sabana estacionalmente inundada, mientras es más escasa en las pampas más áridas de Bolivia oriental. La especie no se encuentra en las sabanas del departamento de La Paz. Hasta hoy no se pudo determinar la subespecie con seguridad absoluta. El suri habita el altiplano occidental de Bolivia, donde existen dos subespecies. Se desconoce su distribución exacta y su ecología en esa región. Esta especie está más amenazada por el hombre que el ñandú.Both South American ostriches live in Bolivia. Nandú (Rhea americana), habits the east lowlands of Bolivia, while "Suri" (Pterocnemia pennata) is found in the Andes. Rhea americana is most abundant at the stationally flooding sabana while it scatters in the arid pampas of East Bolivia. This species cannot be found at the sabanas of La Paz Dpt., and until now, the subspecies has not been determined with absolute security. "Suri" habits the west Altiplano of Bolivia, where 2 subspecies can be found. Its exact distribution is yet unknown along with its ecology within the region. This species is more threatened by man than Nandu.
