Abstract
El tromboembolismo venoso es considerado una de las principales causas de morbilidad y mortalidad en pacientes hospitalizados. Las estrategias de prevención primaria y secundaria están enfocadas principalmente a poblaciones de riesgo y comprenden medidas farmacológicas o físicas. En los últimos años las estatinas ganaron interés en la prevención del tromboembolismo venoso. Los mecanismos propuestos implican efectos antiinflamatorios, efectos en la cascada de la coagulación, estimulación de la fibrinólisis, mecanismos antiplaquetarios y la disminución de lípidos. Estudios de prevención primaria y secundaria del tromboembolismo venoso asignaron beneficios significativos a favor de las estatinas; estos hallazgos tienen implicaciones para la práctica clínica.

Primary and secondary prevention strategies are primarily focused on risk populations and include pharmacological and physical measures. In recent years, statins have gained interest in the prevention of venous thromboembolism. The proposed mechanisms involve anti-inflammatory effects, effects on the coagulation cascade, stimulation of fibrinolysis, antiplatelet mechanisms and lipid lowering. Primary and secondary prevention studies of venous thromboembolism assigned significant benefits in favor of statins, these findings have implications for clinical practice.
