dc.description.abstractThe aim of this review is to describe the possible link between strontium with bone mineral metabolism and osteoporosis. Strontium is an alkaline earth metal that is not very abundant in nature, currently used, as strontium ranelate, in the treatment of patients with osteoporosis who hardly respond or do not respond to treatment with oral or intravenous bisphosphonates. The link between strontium and osteoporosis is being investigated and the possibility of including this element as new biomarker of bone metabolism has been recently suggested. Strontium can be equimolarly exchanged with calcium in a 1:10 ratio and it is integrated into the hydroxyapatite crystals without affecting bone properties; it is wellknown that strontium favors both bone formation, and an increase in bone mineral density, while slows down the bone resorption.
