Manejo odontológico del paciente con lupus eritematoso sistémico: Una revisión sistemática

Abstract

Introduction: Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) is a multisystemic and episodic disease of unknown etiology, its impact can cause complications to the dentist when treating the patient. For this reason, it became relevant to make a systematic review that encompasses the necessary information for the dentist. Therefore, the objective of this review is to describe the dental management of patients with SLE. Methodology: An exhaustive search in PubMed, SciELO, Google Scholar and a manual review of the Acta Odontologica Venezolana was performed, using the following descriptors: oral manifestations, systemic lupus erythematosus and lichen planus. Results: 60 articles were selected from the research: 34 literature reviews, 15 case reports, 3 cases-control studies, 6 cross-sectional studies and a 1 clinical case; they reported that oral lesions, such as ulcers, discoid rash, periodontitis and photosensitivity may occur alone or in combination. Therefore, the treatment depends on the manifestations, severity and the presence of concomitant problems. It is important that the dentist maintains a constant communication with the treating physician. An accurate diagnosis in order to not confuse SLE with other conditions, such as lichen planus that have similar symptoms is strongly recommended. Conclusion: SLE has no cure or  specific management; it depends on the clinical picture presented by the patient. For the dentist, be familiar with SLE's manifestations in order to apply an accurate treatment is suggested.
