In this article we discuss the complex relation between archeology and tourism in the Atacameno region, northern Chile. We reflect on the modernization and patrimonialization processes promoted by the Chilean State, characterized by a growing articulation between mining, scientific and tourist extractivism. We analyze the role of archaeology and the Museum of San Pedro de Atacama in the construction of Atacameno authenticity and the role of the administration of archaeological sites in ethno-development policies.
