CARACTERIZACIÓN DE LA CONCENTRACIÓN DE OZONO SUPERFICIAL EN LA CIUDAD DE LA PAZ EN EL RÉGIMEN DE MADRUGADA

Abstract

Se estudió el comportamiento del ozono superficial medido en la zona central de la ciudad de La Paz (3630 msnm, 16° 29′01"S 68° 08′01"O) en el régimen de madrugada definido por el periodo de 00:00 a 06:00 a.m. La razón para elegir este periodo se debe a la presencia de un máximo relativo alrededor de las 03:00 a.m. que aparece de manera casi permanente en las observaciones. Este pico no es evidente en datos de una estación ubicada en las afueras de la ciudad. Para el estudio se usaron datos horarios entre los años 2007 y 2010. Los resultados obtenidos sugieren que la concentración de ozono observada durante la madrugada es producto de la generación de ozono durante el régimen diurno del día anterior el cual sería transportado hacia las partes altas de la ciudad por los vientos de valle. La masa de aire que conteniendo este aire contaminado sería atrapada en esta región y transportada de retorno hacia el centro de la ciudad en horas de la madrugada del día siguiente. El comportamiento típico del pico anómalo de ozono muestra una fuerte anticorrelación entre ozono superficial y monóxido de nitrógeno. Por otro lado, medidas del tráfico vehicular en el régimen de madrugada muestran claramente a una correlación positiva con la concentración de NO. Esto sugiere que la reducción observada del pico de ozono de la madrugada durante los fines de semana está relacionada con el incremento de tráfico vehicular en ese periodo.

Sz The behavior of surface ozone was studied in the city of La Paz (3630 masl, 16° 29′52"S 68° 08′01"W). Measurements were obtained in downtown between 0:00 and 6:00 a.m. which was defined as the early morning regime. The reason for choosing such period for this is study is related to the existence of an anomalous peak around 3 am which was present in most measurements through the year. Independent measurements carried out at the outskirts of the city did not show this peak. Data from 2007 to 2010 were used for this study. The analysis of surface ozone, nitrogen monoxide, carbon monoxide and associated meteorological data suggests that the peak is a result of surface ozone produced during the previous day in downtown La Paz and transported later to the upper part of the city by the valley winds. The air mass containing this polluted air would be trapped in this region and brought it back to the city early in the morning of the following day. The typical behavior of the anomalous ozone peak shows a strong anticorrelation between surface ozone and nitrogen monoxide. On the other hand, measurements of vehicular traffic early in the morning clearly show a positive correlation with NO concentration suggesting that the observed reduction of the ozone peak during the weekends is related to the increase of vehicular traffic on that period.
