Abstract
We present an annotated list of mammals of the Wildlife Refuge Espíritu, a periodically inundated savanna. The checklist is based primarily on occasional observations made during different ecological studies between 1983 and 1995. Only bats were studied systematically in 1992 and 1995. In an area of about 100 km2, 68 mammal species were surveyed. One estimates that during further studies the inventory will rise to about 80 species, because the bats, rodents and marsupials seem slightly underestimated. The species richness is relatively low compared with tropical forest mammals inventories, but it seems high, considering the extensive yearly inundations, the low forest cover and the limited waterfree areas during the rainy season.
