Colombia has an agricultural tradition that offers significant development possibilities in the postconflict era. However, given today’s knowledge and technology intensive agroindustry, efforts are needed so that the country’s engineering and science fields can contribute towards global competitiveness of Colombian agriculture. In this article, we review the success story of Cartama, an international Hass avocado producer and seller, based on a visit to their operation. From this experience, we identified opportunities and challenges at the intersection of engineering and agro-industrial ventures.
