Abstract
This article will analyze how extra linguistic factors –historical facts and political activity- intervene in the conception of the Spanish language in Latin America during the 19th century and the opinions assumed about it in the city of Merida by the end of that same century. This way, the tendencies and orientations about the language that ruled in Latin America during the 19th century will be able to be appreciated.
