Abstract

Introduction: The entrance Exam to Medical Residencies in Argentina offers paid in-service training opportunities. Objective: To characterize the population of doctors who registered for the Unique Exam and the choice of different specialties. Methods: Descriptive study on medicine professionals who registered for basic specialties. Chosen variables were: age, sex, nationality, place of residency, training institution and most selected specialties. Results: A 74.6% come from Argentinian universities and 25.4% are graduates from foreign universities. From all applicants, 71.50% are Argentinian and 28.50% are foreigners. The average age of applicants is 29.15. Out of 7480 candidates, 61.5% were women and 38.5% were men. The residencies of almost 77% of applicants are concentrated in 4 jurisdictions. The most chosen specialties are pediatrics, internal medicine, surgery, anesthesiology, and obstetrics and gynecology which concentrate 50% of applicants. Conclusions: Knowing the characteristics of the population who sits for the Unique Exam enables the generation of information which allows making health decisions. Mainly, regarding territory distribution and gender which show the need for a specific work agenda.
