Abstract
Descriptive study carried out at ale Department of Epidemiology of ale University Hospital of ale Andes, Merida, Venezuela, in order to determine the number of asymtomatic patients infected with the Adquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome virus (AIDS) registered for January 1987 to April 1997, and to know their characteristics and evolution. There was a progressive increase from 1992, with ale highest increase in 1993 for ale asymptomatic infected and in 1996 for the AIDS symptomatic patients. The age group most affected was between 20 arid 29 years, followed by 30 to 39 years, especially males (86,8%). Most of the patients were from the city of Merida area. The highest proportions are heterosexuals (36,8%), homosexuals (34,2%), bisexuals (22,6%). The main transmission way is the sexual contact (92,1%). The asymptomatic infected are 44% and ale AIDS cases are 56%, 29% were deceased patients.
