Abstract
Introduction: Periodontitis is an infectious and inflammatory disease that causes progressive destruction of the periodontium, also producing functional and aesthetic problems in the patient. In most cases it may ensue from a previous gingivitis. There are several treatments for this disease, although there is no a systematic review that encompasses all of them. The aim of this study is describe the effectiveness of complementary and alternative therapies in periodontitis. Methods: The electronic search was performed using health information sources: Medline through PubMed; electronic libraries: SciELO, Virtual Health Library (VHL) coordinated by BIREME, Redalyc; Cochrane Library via the VHL; open access publishing: Hindawi and academic search engines like Google Scholar, in the Venezuelan Odontological Act and in the Jacobo Calanche Library of Dentistry School at the University of Los Andes. Clinical trials, systematic reviews, clinical cases and literature review were included, excluding patients with diseases other than periodontitis. Results: 60 studies that met the inclusion criteria were identified. There are several conventional treatments such as scaling and root planing (SRP) however, there is an increased effectiveness when they work in conjunction with complementary treatments, although, there are alternative treatments that are effective too. Conclusion:It is recommended to do more experimental studies for better application at dental office.
