Abstract

In order to know the effects of structured digital representations in the cognition of architectural students, a qualitative study on actions of transformations in cognitive ideation activities is presented. The data from retrospective verbalizations and performance records are obtained from the resolution of an architectural problem. Design protocols are analyzed according to Ericson´s and Simon´s guidelines (1993) and the constant comparison method of Glaser and Strauss (1967). The results reveal that transformation characterizes digitally assisted ideation. Actions are about transforming, organizing and correcting. They are presented as iterative and recursive, the latter prevails to generate, compose and evaluate design ideas.
