Abstract
In the framework of the project "Weaving Communities of Practice", this essay explores a new approach towards the Vocabulario de la Lengua Aymara, by Ludovico Bertonio, written originally in 1612. Our objective was to regroup the Vocabulario entries into semantic fields linked to the textile domain, which could be visualized on a computer screen, as well as consulted with reference to this domain by site users. This domain includes 3,000 entries in the Vocabulario focused on the textile productive chain, from the rearing of fi bre-producing animals, through the collection of raw materials (above all fleece), and its conversion to raw materials (through carding, spinning, plying and dyeing), to the activities of textile production (warping the loom, weaving and finishing), and then the circulation of the textile product in Andean society. We use an ontological approach directed towards thesaurus preparation, and a new software visor has been designed for the semantic visualization of the Vocabulario. Some final reflections on the cultural content of the Vocabulario are made possible by this approach.
