Abstract
Candida albicans is a microorganism being part of the normal microflora of the mouth, however, when a patient wears removable partial dentures (RPD)the amount of C. albicans yeast increases because of the dentures material porosity enhancing the attachment of microorganism being for which patientmins oral hygiene is a basic factor for maintaining supporting structures healthy. The propoleum ethanolic extracts (PEE) are characterized by an antifungal activity against C. albicans due to their bioactive components. The goal of the present research was to determine the effectiveness of commercial PEE in Merida State for the elimination of C. albicans in hard acrylic resin samples of RPD. Different PEE proportions were tested. Two tests were performed: desinfection of the acrylic samples submerged into different PEE for 5, 10, 15 and 20 minutes and 8 hours; later the agar diffusion to determine the halos of inhibitions. In a first time it was found that in petri dishes showed growing of C. albicans just in the controls; in the second period agar diffusion the PEE at 20% generated a smaller inhibition of halo, PEE at 30% and 40% generated irregular shape inhibitory halos and C. albicans growing was observed after 24 hours. Effectiveness of PEE for the inhibition of C. albicans after 5 minutes of samples immersion. The PEE at 20% showed inhibition of C. albicans growing at 30% and 40% they exhibited antifungal activity towards C. albicans.
