Abstract

The objective of this study was to determine the extent to which parental divorce is related to the emotional intelligence of the children in 80 first-semester students at Adventist University of Bolivia in 2016. It is a descriptive, quantitative and correlational research which design is non- experimental and cross-sectional approach. In its development, two instruments were used to collect the information: the Quintero (2013) divorce questionnaire and the BarOn Emotional Quotient Inventory (BarOn EQ-i BarOn) (1997). The most relevant found results turn around the existence of an inverse and sig- nificant relationship between the parents' divorce and the emotional intelligence of the children in the following way: when the problem of parental divorce tends to worsen, it also tends to diminish emotional intelligence as a whole, this means that intrapersonal and interpersonal intelligence, adaptability, and mood reduce. It does not happen the same with tolerance for tension which does not change in the face of parents' divorce situation.
