Abstract

The present study realized using satellite image is located at the contact zone between the Andes chain and the Maracaibo Foredeep, between Torondoy at SW and Valera city at NE in the Nortwestern Flank of the Merida Andes. The analysis of the satellite image Land sat TM No 006/054 complemented with the field study allowed the definition of the regional structural setting as well as the Tectonic model for the study area. The analysis was realiced with the digital procedure that can identify and individualize two directional group into of directional element visible in the satellite image. A first group of structural elements is relate with a important sistem of accidents with kilometric extension oriente N 55o - 60oE, parallel at andina chain. This accidents have been interpreting as thrust fault sub-parallel between them. The ;; Las Virtudes;; fault represent the precambriam-paleozoic basement overthrust the mezo-cenozoic cover of Maracaibo basin as consequence of the Plio-Pleistocene Venezuelan Andes uplift. Others thrust fault and back thrust are disposed sub-parallel with principal thrust fault. The second group of structural elements is obtainedstarting with satellital analysis that constituent a group of faults with direction N 55o - 60o W. The tectonic-structural model correspond a system of slices of thrust fault and back thrust fault imbricate. The general geometry is assimilated a triangle zone.
