Abstract
Periodontal disease is the set of disorders associated with inflammation and the loss of support structures of the teeth; its high prevalence and distribution worldwide, together with the fact that it represents the majority of oral diseases, means that it is considered a public health problem. There are studies aimed at examining the effect of different therapies on periodontal disease, with the aim of restoring a microbial community compatible with the health of the host. However, they are not always effective as a single treatment in the improvement of clinical characteristics. Scientific reports mention that after the mechanical removal of the biofilm, the periodontal pathogens re-colonize the periodontal pocket in a few months, which is why some scientists indicate that adjunctive therapies include periodontal treatment such as antibiotic therapy, probiotics and phytotherapy. The objective of this article is to present a bibliographic review of the most common medicinal plants used in periodontal therapy. A search for literature was conducted through the following sources of information: PubMed, Virtual Health Library, Cochrane Reviews, Lilacs; and manual search in updated periodontics books. Finally, it is concluded that the use of medicinal plants as alternative treatment is valid and viable in the control of periodontal disease.
