Abstract
This essay assesses the mathematical knowledge that cultures build, and tries to rescue the lin-guistic process in the communication of this knowledge, in order to contribute to its teaching and learning. It states that teachers lack a training that links the cultural capital of their students with current study programs and addresses the role of mathematics in cultural development and its integration into the classroom. Work carried out in Colombia and Mexico are presented to train teachers ethnomathematics. This is, the mathematics of people and the formal knowledge of the school curriculum.
