Abstract

This paper summarizes the result of exploring into the thoughts of Rene Descartes, at his youth age, included in the work Rules for the direction of the Mind. It has the aim of finding elements that prove the origin of the Cartesian idea related to the fusion of two mathematical areas: Algebra and Geometry, as the now known Analytic Geometry. This investigation represents an epistemological approach to a mathematical topic. The same way, this article defines the real legacy of Descartes to Analytic Geometry.
