PAINTING AND NARRATIVES: EXEMPLARY LIFES AND THE COLONIAL SUBJECTS

Abstract

ABSTRACT Saints and the idea of holiness are a historical construction. As idealized subjects, each epoch and culture determine what are the values and virtues that these must contain so they will be erected as behavioral role models, and in this process the sacred becomes a subject creator. This article explores the ideal of holiness that was developed in the New Kingdom of Nueva Granada from the colonial painting and its relationship with the literary narratives of exemplary subjects, to observe how a speech was generated that it would contribute to the formation of the colonial subject.
