Abstract
This study analyzes the impact of Project-Based Learning (PBL) on the mathematical competencies of second-year high school (BGU) students in Ecuador over an academic term. A quasi-experimental design with control and experimental groups, complemented by qualitative techniques, was employed to assess the development of mathematical competencies such as problem solving, logical reasoning, and critical thinking, under the PBL methodology. The results show significant improvements in academic performance, in students’ ability to solve mathematical problems in real-world contexts, and in their motivation toward the subject when PBL is implemented. Likewise, more meaningful and collaborative learning is observed, in line with the objectives of Ecuador’s national curriculum. The study concludes that PBL enhances students’ mathematical competencies and attitudes toward mathematics, provided its application is appropriately adapted to the educational context.
