Abstract

Helicobacter pylori is a Gram negative bacterium persistently inhabiting human gastrointestinal mucosa, and dental plaque seems to influence the hosting of H. pylori in the oral cavity. OBJECTIVE: the purpose of the present research was to determine the relationship between the presence of Helicobacter pylori (Hp) in subgingival plaque and patients with chronic periodontitis (CP). MATERIALS AND METHODS: a correlational study with transactional, non-experimental design was conducted. Sample was constituted by 15 subjects between 22-66 years old presenting chronic periodontitis who attended the Department of Periodontology, Faculty of Dentistry, University of Los Andes, Merida, Venezuela. The sample was taken from the deepest periodontal pockets by scrapings from the subgingival tooth surface using a periodontal Gracey curette. The sample was analyzed by testing Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) to identify the presence of bacteria and determine whether there is a relationship between the two variables. The results showed a negative association, considering that all of the subgingival plaque samples processed showed nobacteria. CONCLUSION: The oral cavity acts as a reservoir for H. pylori; however, the results show that H.pylori seems not to be involved in periodontal disease.
