Abstract

Objective. Propose a comprehensive system for storing hospital residue and solid waste at the Instituto Autónomo Hospital Universitario de Los Andes (IAHULA) Merida, Venezuela. Methodology. Descriptive, non-experimental field, feasible project type; it was carried out in five phases: document review, analysis of the current situation, identifying ways of storing, categorization and design of an integrated system for storing residue and solid waste in the IAHULA. For data collection a questionnaire and observation was applied. It took into account the staff that had direct relation to the handling and storage of waste and hospital waste, therefore, the sample consisted of 68 workers (38 workers and 30 nurses). Results. 100 % of the workers did not use the containers for separate residue and solid waste contaminated by not having established in the rules of the institution; 100 % of nurses handled and discarded residue and solid waste with suitable techniques, except in the disposal o f needles and sharp objects piercing; 58.82 % considered it important that before starting their work should be trained on how to protect themselves against various infectious agents present in the hospital areas and 100 % fully agreed to integrate equipment with technologies that facilitate the process residue storage and solid waste. Conclusion. In storage of residue and solid waste, IAHULA not comply with national and international standards set. It is required to implement the comprehensive system proposed in these regulations where all the actors who live in that health center are involved.
