Abstract

The use of social media as an educational resource has been successfully implemented in some innovative experiences, especially related to the university environment. Dentistry does not escape the impact on the teaching-learning process through social media. The aim of this paper is to characterize the use of social media for educational purposes in dentistry. The present scoping review through an electronic search in English in the search engine Elsevier (Science Direct), PubMed (Medline), Cochrane, and in Spanish the Google Scholar search engine. Twenty articles published between 2010 and 2020 related to the topic were selected. It was found that many students use social networks and mobile applications for learning purposes due to their easy access; Facebook was the most used. The use of social networks is positive as a learning tool, motivating the traditional academic model to move to a new model.
